The Involvement Load Hypothesis or the Technical Feature Analysis: Evidence from Four EFL Vocabulary Learning Tasks

چکیده
L2 vocabulary acquisition is of much importance to learners and has long been the hot topic in field applied linguistics. Stimulated by Technical Feature Analysis (TFA) Involvement Load Hypothesis (ILH) particular, a large body research attempted find relative efficacy various tasks facilitating acquisition. However, there paucity regarding effectiveness ILH TFA accounting for task type effects on Therefore, present study attempts compare TFA. The two main questions are stated as follows: 1. How does (reading comprehension with glosses, gap filling, rewording composition) affect EFL acquisition? 2. Which better explains acquisition, or (TFA)? This employed one-way ANCOVA (analysis covariance) design between-subject factor being covariate knowledge. dependent variable was which included dimensions, i.e., word form recognition passive meaning recall. knowledge posttests immediate delayed posttests. After completing (vocabulary size) test, 117 non-English major freshmen were randomly assigned one four learning tasks, reading glosses (an index 1 versus an 5 TFA), filling 2 7 3 6 TFA) composition 8 TFA). total time required different groups held constant. Then, completion respective participants take One week after posttest, all took All data collected valid.

Predictive Power of Involvement Load Hypothesis and Technique Feature Analysis across L2 Vocabulary Learning Tasks
Involvement Load Hypothesis (ILH) and Technique Feature Analysis (TFA) are two frameworks which operationalize depth of processing of a vocabulary learning task. However, there is dearth of research comparing the predictive power of the ILH and the TFA across second language (L2) vocabulary learning tasks. The present study, therefore, aimed to examine this issue across four vocabulary learning...

متن کاملThe Involvement Load Hypothesis and Vocabulary Learning: The Effect of Task Types and Involvement Index on L2 Vocabulary Acquisition
This study builds on Laufer and Hulstijn’s (2001) motivational-cognitive construct of task-induced involvement in learning vocabulary and addresses itself to its strong claim that the depth of processing is the overriding factor in learning words. The paper first re-examines the effect of processing load and then of task type on the initial learning and retention of words. To do so, 60 EFL lear...
متن کاملL2 Vocabulary Learning and the Use of Reading Tasks: Manipulating the Involvement Load Index
As Schmidt (2008) states, deeper engagement with new vocabulary as induced by tasks clearly increases the chances of learning those words. This engagement is theoretically clarified by the involvement load hypothesis (ILH, Laufer and Hulstijn, 2001), based on which the involvement index of each task can be measured. The present study was designed to test ILH by evaluating the impact of 4 differ...
